Introduction
Hello, and welcome to my IOCSR. On this website, I will document my growth as an individual when it comes to anything dealing with communications. This is where it all begins, so I would like to tell you more about myself, starting with some basic information followed by a self evaluation of my personal communication skills. Finally, I will describe my goals when it comes to communications.
Some basic information
I am a sophomore finance student who plans to minor in business analytics. I like to play sports, and I have been on many teams in the past including rugby teams, lacrosse teams, wrestling teams, and many more. I am extremely passionate about fitness and health, and to be honest, it probably takes up most of my life. I am so passionate about it that I decided to make a YouTube channel about it this semester, which I think is an extremely interesting talking point and way to track my progress with communications.
Self Evaluation
First thing I would like to point out is to the right. That is the first video I put up on my Youtube channel, and you may be thinking, "What does that have to do with anything?" That Youtube channel was started a few weeks into the semester, so while it is not right at the beginning, it is still a very good way to remember what my communication skills were like before learning too much from this class.
I start out extremely awkward and uncomfortable. Speaking in front of the camera really took me out of my comfort zone. I couldn't look into my phone without nervously smiling and looking away. I tried to force myself to act natural, but it only worked to some extent. The video editing was alright, and in the end, I am pleased with the outcome for being my baseline. It is something I know I can improve with practice. |

The next major talking point in my self evaluation should be about how I function in a business environment. It completely depends on my mood while talking to people. Some days I feel confident and slick. I have answers to every question, and I keep the conversation flowing in a good direction. I would say more often I am a little intimidated to try to talk to people, and I can be a bit unnatural. This is especially true for interviews. I don't know why, but I can know answers to questions before they are asked and somehow forget them when it comes time to talk. I know each answer should be around 2 minutes, but I always draw a blank on examples from my own life. Whenever I do think of examples, it tends to be from the same activity over and over because my mind begins thinking about only one thing I have done in the past. Drawing blanks is an issue with anytime I am talking to a superior, but I mentioned interviews specifically because that is when people really ask you questions.
Finally, I'd like to discuss how I interact with others in teams or in general. I am an extremely outgoing person and can make myself get along with just about anyone. I tend to find the good in people, and that makes me have very few bad relationships. I would say I am very well liked and make friends easy. This also shows in my ability to work with a group. I typically find my group outperforming other groups in tasks, and I think it is due to my extensive teamwork in the past. I would say I act as a leader in groups very often for three reasons: I was a leader on many teams in the past, I am very extroverted with my ideas, and people usually listen to me because I am pretty charismatic. I would say being a leader and working in teams is my strong point when it comes to communications and is an area that doesn't need much improving. If there is one thing I would like to improve about my teamwork, though, it would be that I should be a little less controlling. I'm not usually controlling in the way that I tell people what to do, but I can sometimes really take over the discussion because of my very assertive personality. There are probably other minor improvements to make elsewhere, but that is probably my biggest weak point.

My goals and what I would like to get out of this class
My plan for this semester is pretty straight forward. I would essentially just like to gain experience in presenting. The most important thing for becoming skilled at anything is to practice, and I believe this class will give me an environment where I can practice these skills. I expect to do some work to advance my teamwork skills, but I hope for the biggest improvements in my presentation skills. I believe I will achieve this by presenting in front of the class, and I believe having my Youtube channel will be a really big part in both becoming comfortable and tracking my expereience throughout the semester.
